History of Tees Hazari Court

The construction of the Tis Hazari Courts Building started in 1953 and was completed in 1958 at a cost of around Rs. 85 lakhs. The court complex was inaugurated on 19 March 1958 by Chief Justice A. N. Bhandari of the then Punjab High Court.

At the time of its establishment, Delhi had only one district court complex, and all civil courts along with many criminal courts functioned from Tees Hazari. Over the years, as Delhi expanded, new court complexes such as Patiala House, Karkardooma, Rohini, Dwarka, and Saket Courts were established to reduce pressure on Tees Hazari Courts.

The name “Tis Hazari” literally means “Thirty Thousand.” According to historical accounts, the area got its name from a Sikh force of around thirty thousand soldiers that camped here during the 18th century before the Battle of Delhi.
