The history of the Indore Bench is connected with the judicial development of the former princely state of Indore and later Madhya Bharat State. During British rule, parts of Indore under British jurisdiction followed British judicial systems, while the Holkar rulers maintained their own judicial administration. After independence, the State of Madhya Bharat was formed in 1947, and Indore became one of its major judicial centres. On 26 January 1950, a constitutional High Court started functioning at Indore under Justice P. K. Kaul. Later, land for the present High Court building was obtained from Maharaja Holkar, and the foundation stone was laid by President Dr. Rajendra Prasad on 22 March 1955.
In 1956, after the formation of the new State of Madhya Pradesh under the States Reorganisation Act, the principal seat of the High Court was established at Jabalpur. However, temporary benches were also created at Indore and Gwalior on 1 November 1956.
Later, through a Presidential Notification dated 28 November 1968 under Section 51(2) of the States Reorganisation Act, the Indore Bench became a permanent bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
