History of High Court Ranchi
The history of the Jharkhand High Court is closely connected with the Patna High Court. A circuit bench of the Patna High Court was first established at Ranchi on 6 March 1972 under Clause 36 of the Letters Patent of the Patna High Court.
Later, through the High Court at Patna (Establishment of Permanent Bench at Ranchi) Act, 1976, the circuit bench became a permanent bench on 8 April 1976.
After the Bihar Reorganisation Act, 2000 created the separate state of Jharkhand, the permanent bench at Ranchi was officially elevated to the status of the Jharkhand High Court on 15 November 2000.
The court initially functioned from the old judicial complex at Doranda. Due to increasing workload and infrastructure requirements, a new High Court complex was later developed at Dhurwa, Ranchi.
The new High Court building was inaugurated by President Droupadi Murmu on 24 May 2023. Spread across around 165 acres, it is considered the largest High Court complex in India by area.
